Closed Adoptions and Abortion

The Senate Affairs Committee hearing held in Austin on March 27 made strange bedfellows of closed adoptions and abortion. The committee heard testimony regarding proposed SB329 (a bill sponsored by Senator Brandon Creighton, which, if passed, would give adult adoptees born in Texas the right to access their original birth certificates.) Dozens of birthparents, adoptive parents, adoptees and professionals testified about the negative impact of closed adoption practices and how granting adult adoptees could change Texan lives. Testimony was also heard with regards to SB1362 (a bill sponsored by Senator Donna Campbell, which, if passed, would simply reiterate the existing requirement that agencies must provide information about the Texas Voluntary Adoption Registry to prospective birthparents and adoptive parents before placement.) Hunting for Babies to Adopt

It seems that adopting parents hunting for babies to adopt are becoming more and more aggressive in their quest to locate the hidden treasure they seek. We get it: there's an ever-limited number of infants being placed for adoption nowadays, and a constantly-growing number of would-be parents vying to be chosen. Greater numbers of prospective adoptive parents are now seeking to do private adoptions, in an effort to avoid paying agency fees, so more people than ever before are crowding the Internet hunting for babies to adopt. They don't always do so with grace or restraint, unfortunately. And that has given rise to a new term that describes them: adoptoraptors. Don't be an adoptoraptor. Give Up Baby

When we asked the young mother-to-be in our lobby how she had found her way to Abrazo , she said she had used Google to look up "how to give up baby" and that was what led her to our website. She had known, she said, that she was not ready to be a mom. She had told the baby's father, too, but he said it was her problem and denied the baby was his. She had told her friends, who told her to go get an abortion but couldn't help her find the money. She had told her mother, who said she had made her own bed and now had to lie in it.
